Aaron's brother Eric turned 30. Darien threw him an awesome surprise 80s party on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, so we decided to make the trek up and party. Aaron and I were at Goodwill the night before the party trying to find something awesome to wear when I realized I had a denim jacket and a puffy vest and Aaron had a lab coat. We left goodwill, bought some white hairspray at Party City and we were good to go...Can you believe Marty and Doc came all the way from 1985 to celebrate Eric's birthday??
We had a fun time at the party but had to head back that night as I had to work at the hospital that morning. After work on Saturday, we packed up our camping gear and headed back to DC (maybe we're crazy?). We hung out with Eric and Darien and went to dinner with them that night. Sunday morning, right after 8am sacrament meeting, we decided to be crazy and go camping at Chincoteague/Assateague island. If you haven't read
Misty of Chincoteague, you are totally missing out. The area is famous for wild horses (what the book is about), but it's also a beach area. The whole area though is now a little touristy. We booked a spot at a family camping ground for Sunday night. What we didn't plan on were mosquitoes! We apparently came to Chincoteague in peak swamp season and there were mosquitoes everywhere. I don't normally get bit, but these were nasty, ginormous mosquitoes who basically ate everyone. We had to buy the Deep Woods Off. Our citronella candle and organic repellant just wasn't cutting it. We managed to keep the baby safe from any bites.
Sunday afternoon/evening it was a little misty/rainy so we decided to drive around see the island for awhile and then when it slowed down, we rent some bikes and rode around. We biked over the bridge to Assateague, but once it was more "wilderness-y" the mosquitoes were ruthless so we turned around. From there we stopped at the local homemade ice cream joint which was delicious.
We made a fire and ate tinfoil dinners that night at our campsite and hung out until it was time for bed. We all slept alright and then we got ready for the beach. We spent a few hours hanging out at the beach that morning and then we showered off and headed home. We stopped for ice cream once again (the girl who took our order remembered us from the night before...embarrassing!). We stopped at the outlet mall and some farmstands on the way home. Overall, we had a fun time, but the mosquitoes were so terrifying that it was also kind of miserable. Luckily we like Eric, Darien, and Audi so we had fun with them.
